Industry Trends
In the pursuit of delivering healthcare services to patients, medical facilities inevitably generate huge amounts of waste which can be termed as health-care waste or medical waste. Medical waste as per the definition by 1988 Medical Waste Tracking Act of U.S Environmental Protection Agency is, ‘the waste generated during medical research, testing, diagnosis, immunization, or treatment of either human beings or animals’. This comprises of various elements such as cotton/bandages contaminated with blood and other bodily fluids, organs, body parts, syringes, needles, disposable scalpels, solvents, reagents, sterilants, expired or unused drugs, cytotoxic drugs, radioactive diagnostic material and many others. The waste generated has high potential of causing either infection or injury to the healthcare workers, solid waste workers or others coming in contact with it and also poses contamination risk to the environment. There is a continuous growth in healthcare services availed by global population thus leading to rise in generation of medical waste. World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 16 billion injections are administered every year. If a person gets injured by a used needle or injection, he has high risk of getting infected with diseases such as HBV, HCV or HIV. Countries with high income generate an average of up to 0.5 kg of hazardous waste per hospital bed daily, while low income and developing countries generate on average 0.2 kg waste per bed daily. Effective management of this notably growing healthcare waste has thus become a crucial component in environmental and public safety, hence propelling the growth of medical waste management market across the globe.
The on-going pandemic outbreak of novel coronavirus with more than 100,000 cases daily across the world, has led to an upsurge in medical waste generated by healthcare facilities. For instance, in the wake of COVID-19, Wuhan, a city of China, generated 240 tonnes of medical waste with an increase of 600%. This rise in generation of health-care related waste has contributed towards rise in global medical waste management market.
The treatment and elimination methods for medical waste require considerable technical and financial resources along with a legal framework. Inadequate and inappropriate handling of healthcare waste may result into serious consequences. The most commonly used practices for medical waste disposal are incineration and landfills. The disposal of untreated wastes into landfill can lead to contamination of surface and drinking water. Also, the improper incineration of healthcare wastes can lead to emission of dioxins, furans, and particulate matter thus, polluting the environment. Ministry of Environment and Forests of India states that almost 28% of the biomedical waste is left untreated and not disposed. The rise in generation of medical waste and its impacts when improperly disposed, has resulted the governments to apply stringent disposal regulations. Initiatives such as Environmental Management Act of Canada with predefined emission criteria for medical waste incinerators have streamlined environmental impact of medical waste disposal. Also, international agreements including the Stockholm Convention for reducing organic pollutants including dioxins and furans from incineration of medical waste and Basel Convention for reducing mercury pollution from hazardous wastes along with other agreements have mandated healthcare facilities for adoption of medical waste management solutions. Thus, the rising environmental and public health awareness coupled with stringent regulations have propelled the growth of global medical waste management market.
Offerings Outlook:
Based on type of offerings, global medical waste management market is bifurcated in products and services. Products for medical waste management include the treatment systems, recycling machines, and many others while services include the collection, treatment and disposal, recycling and other such services. Services segment held largest share of global medical waste management market in 2019 owing to high cost incurred in purchasing and operating in-house medical waste management infrastructure leading to adoption of third party services. Collection and transportation of medical waste along with treatment and disposal services are contributing a significant share in global medical waste management market owing to stringent government regulations for medical waste treatment. Due to the inconvenience in operating medical waste disposal equipment, healthcare institutions are opting third party services to comply with stringent government regulations, thus boosting the growth of global medical waste management market.
Waste Type Outlook:
Based on the waste type, non-hazardous medical waste dominated the global medical waste management market in 2019. World Health Organizations estimates claim that 85% of the total waste generated by healthcare facilities around the world is non-hazardous waste, thus contributing towards its large market share in medical waste disposal activities. However, health-care waste is often not segregated efficiently into hazardous or non-hazardous wastes in low-income countries thus contaminating entire waste and the making the real quantity of hazardous waste much higher. These factors are expected to propel growth of bio-hazardous and hazardous waste in global medical waste management market over forecast period.
Treatment Site Outlook:
Based on the location of treatment, onsite treatment held the highest share of global medical waste management market in 2019; however offsite treatment is anticipated to show fastest growth rate over forecast years. As the space and cost factors restrict the waste handling capacity of onsite medical waste management equipment, the rise in medical waste generation at hospitals and other healthcare institutions have undermined this onsite infrastructure for treatment and disposal of medical waste generated daily. These factors have pushed the adoption of third party services for medical waste management at offsite locations and thus anticipated to propel the share of offsite treatment in global medical waste management market over future years.
Regional Outlook:
North America led the global medical waste management market in 2019 owing to high geriatric population which requires frequent hospitalization and medical attention. U.S with a developed healthcare sector generates around 5 million tonnes of medical waste annually which has contributed towards North America’s highest share in global medical waste management market. However, Asia Pacific region is expected to grow fastest in medical waste management market owing to growing medical infrastructure coupled with government initiatives for waste disposal. For instance, India, a developing Asian country, produces about 0.19 million tonnes of medical waste per year owing to growth in medical tourism and healthcare infrastructure. This rise in generation of medical waste has mandated the governments of Asia Pacific region to initiate actions for regulating medical waste disposal. For instance, Japan’s Ministry of the Environment along with United Nations announced a US$ 3 million program in July 2019 to monitor mercury emission, which is commonly found in medical waste, and prevent it at source. In a similar instance, Ministry of Environment and Forests of India amended their biomedical waste disposal regulations in 2016 to improve the waste management through provision for pre-treatment and barcode system for segregation. Thus the rise in medical waste coupled with government initiatives in Asia Pacific is anticipated to propel the growth of global medical waste management market over forecast period.
In terms of revenue, global medical waste management market was valued at US$ 8,407.11 Mn in 2019 and is anticipated to reach US$ 13,268.84 Mn by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 5.2% over the forecast period. The study analyses the market in terms of revenue across all the major regions, which have been bifurcated into countries.
