Orthokeratology or ortho-k lens is a rigid gas permeable contact lens made up of durable plastic used in corneal refractive therapy. They are capable of temporarily reshaping the corneal surface to improve eye vision. Despite its relative nascence, orthokeratology lens market is gaining significant traction as it offers a pain-free non-surgical treatment to correct myopia, presbyopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and other kinds of vision impairment. Ortho-k lenses are worn at night while sleeping which reshapes the cornea to deliver clear vision in the day time. The requirement and impact of ortho-k lenses differ from person to person. Some people take a few weeks of wearing the ortho-k lenses to reach and maintain stable 20/20 vision during the day while others might need more. Currently, there are two FDA approved Ortho-K therapies available in the market for corneal refractive therapy namely, Paragon Vision Sciences’ Paragon CRT and Quadra RG lenses.

The orthokeratology lens market has several advantages over other alternatives for vision correction. Regular substitutes for vision correction include eye glasses, regular contact lenses, extended contact lenses, LASIK or PRK. Continuous wearing of contact lens or eyeglasses improves vision only till the time it is worn. Retainer lenses lack the feature of oxygen permeability and hence overnight wearing is considered unsafe. Laser vision correction surgeries such as LASIK or PRK are not recommended until vision is stable, which limits the option of refractive surgery to those who are 18 years of age or older. Thus, ortho-k lens is considered to be an ideal treatment alternative for young patients.

Another key factor fuelling the orthokeratology lens market growth is its value to those involved in sports or athletics. Athletes need the ability to have daytime vision free either of spectacles or contact lenses. They usually operate in dirty, dusty and dynamic environments. They also require more stable vision during quick head and body movements, superior peripheral vision and a wide field of view. Additionally, the reversibility of ortho-k is beneficial for athletes who are young for LASIK. Hence, ortho-k is ideal for athletes in grade school and high school.

Although, lack of awareness among patients regarding safety and convenience of fitting of these lenses is expected to impede the optimum growth of orthokeratology lens market. However, the increasing number of online campaigns to increase awareness among people about the use of orthokeratology lenses is projected to boost the demand in the forecast years.
